"How do you write so much???"

Nine radio plays + novel rewrites + starting a new play??

Yes it's a Shakespeare thing. It usually is.

Who knew that a background in Shakespeare would help me:

  • submit nine radio plays in two days while

  • rewriting my debut novel and

  • spinning a new full-length play outline out of a philosophy discussion concerning AI's parallels with medieval alchemy?

Yep.

In sooth, I will be brief.

Shakespeare taught me so much about life, gender, friendship, etc.

But because he was also a poet, his work was the first genre-blending I came across as a writer.

So, when I got an invitation to write some 60-second radio plays, my first thought was,

"Yipes! How is my chatty brain gonna stay under time?"

My second thought was,

"Hang on. You literally wrote a bunch of monologues when you were doing that 'write a poem every day' thing."

(Yeah; I wrote a poem every day for most of my senior year of undergrad. On top of 6 shows. And two jobs. Huh, I notice a theme here...)

So I pulled up some poems that had yet to see the light of day, moved some lines around to break a couple into scenes, blinked, and realized I'd compiled a packet of nine radio plays.

Tee hee!

In all honesty, I love the freedom I found with Shakespeare for riffing, adapting, and responding to others' works.

Because it gave new life to my own.

And yes, I did this while rewriting my novel and chewing on a new outline for a full-length play.

Rotating stories isn't flighty for me.

It's letting one thing simmer on the back burner while I give another story the attention it needs.

More next week on this new full-length idea. For now...

My Invitation For You

Stories are one of our most powerful tools. And they get stronger with every person who joins.

When you subscribe to RGS, you get to see my plays as they develop.

And we're working towards live readings where you get to have a say in how those stories evolve.

I know you're ready to join our story:

You're loved. You're not alone. Welcome to the RGS story.

Remember, you're loved. You're not alone.

Sending hugs,

Roen
